Far-ultraviolet to Near-infrared Spectroscopy of a Nearby Hydrogen-poor Superluminous Supernova Gaia16apd
We report the first maximum-light far-ultraviolet (FUV) to near-infrared (NIR) spectra (1000Å − 1.62 μm, rest) of a hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova, Gaia16apd. At z=0.1018, it is the second closest and the UV brightest SLSN-I, with 17.4 mag in Swift UVW2 band at −11 days pre-maximum. The coordinated observations with HST, Palomar, and Keck were taken at −2 to +25 days. Assuming an expon...

متن کاملStellar Explosions by Magnetic Towers
We propose a magnetic mechanism for the collimated explosion of massive stars relevant for long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), X-ray Flashes (XRFs) and asymmetric core collapse supernovae. In particular, we apply Lynden-Bell’s magnetic tower scenario to the interior of a massive rotating star after the core has collapsed to form a collapsar with a black hole accretion disk or a millisecond m...
متن کاملStellar Explosions: from Supernovae to Gamma-ray Bursts
Current understanding of core collapse and thermonuclear supernovae is reviewed. Recent progress in unveiling the nature of cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRB) is discussed, with the focus on the apparent link of several GRBs with an energetic subclass of stellar explosions, type Ib/c core-collapse supernovae. This relation provides the strong case that the GRB phenomenon is connected with the final ...
متن کاملStellar explosions powered by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism
In this letter we briefly describe the first results of our numerical study on the possibility of magnetic origin of relativistic jets of long duration gamma ray bursters within the collapsar scenario. We track the collapse of massive rotating stars onto a rotating central black hole using axisymmetric general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic code that utilizes a realistic equation of state of ...
